Oil on Canvas, framed

Formal elements and the process of painting are my inspiration. Primarily I work in oils on canvas or wood panel. My contemporary realist work is grounded in the tradition of still life painting and observational drawing. I’m particular about composition and keep in mind expressiveness of application as it pertains to mark and surface quality.

My work is “perceptual” in that it is most always drawn from direct observation. The subject matter I choose is seen from a fixed point of view and I deal primarily with appearances from that angle of vision. It’s important to me that my work be accessible and convincing to viewers. I want it first to engage the eye and then the mind. If a painting is visually interesting it will lead to further contemplation. Many of the boxes I paint are open. To me, this suggests awakening, openness and potential.

These forms serve as visual signifiers of the psychological space occupied by emotions, ideas and stories. I avoid trying to convey a specific meaning, allowing the boxes to conjure a multitude of associations. I want viewers to see my images as containers for their own thoughts or feelings.
